Why would I use chalk paint?
Chalk paint is most often used to give pieces of furniture a matte look, but it can also be used to paint an entire wall if you really love the effect. It has the power to turn a bedroom dresser into a standout piece or give a dining room table an old-school charm.
Chalk paint is simply a finishing paint. One of the appeals of chalk paint is that little prep is needed – you don't need to prime and it can be distressed easily. It is also very forgiving.
CHALK PAINT CONS:
Chalk paint is thick and leaves brush marks. (Latex paint will also leave brush marks, but last time I used a spray gun for the latex paint.) You can't have custom colors mixed with Annie Sloan paint, though you are encouraged to mix them yourself.
The minerals and pores in chalk paint means it grips better than latex paint. Prep is usually easier with chalk paint.
And honestly, chalk paint by itself, especially if there wasn't any sanding or priming before, is just not very durable. It can scratch and ding pretty easily. So, we need a topcoat to seal the chalk paint in. Click here to read all about choosing the right Topcoats for Painting Furniture.
Do you have to seal Chalk Paint®? Not all projects need wax. There are of course exceptions to every rule. If you know your paintwork won't be subjected to daily wear and tear, you can skip the wax.
Chalk paint is thicker than acrylic paint and dries in a chalky finish while acrylic paint has better self-leveling properties which leave minimal brush marks behind. As far as cost, depending on the brand of paint you choose, you can find cheap or name-brand versions of each paint.

While chalk paint can last from 1 to 5 years if stored properly, chalk paint will dry up much faster than that if left exposed to air. If your chalk paint has thickened considerably since last use, know that you can thin it with water if you'd like to use it again.
If you don't seal your chalk paint, you're going to wind up repainting those high-traffic pieces after the paint has chipped. You're also going to spend more time sweeping up flecks of chalk paint that fall off of your painted surfaces.
What happens if you dont wax chalk paint?
If you don't it's going to get marked – water will harm it. You need to be able to protect it in some way, and I devised the wax to go with the paint. I think the wax is the most beautiful, I really love it.

When chalk is dipped into water, it has a different texture than when it is dry and makes thicker and softer lines. Children can experiment with blending different colors and creating new lines and design and even blurring the lines by using a paint or scrub brush.
Poly top coats are hands down more durable and offer the ultimate protection for your painted furniture. 2. The second difference has to do with the application. Waxes are applied with a rag or brush and must be buffed; poly top coats are brushed on and allowed to dry and cure.
